The Chick Magnets
From their debut in early 2001 The Chick Magnets built up something of a cult following among Christchurch's live music fans. Not content to be just another covers band The Chick Magnets managed to avoid the classic hits rut, choosing material that was new to many of their audience. The group got busy putting together a kiwi set and generally moved towards a wider range of material, including seventies and eighties hidden classics.

"We thought it might be fun to do a sixties covers band... to dig around a bit and dust off some of the lesser known gems". Oliver Scott.
"After years of earnestly playing originals it's a fantastic change to be playing these songs, and just because they're covers doesn't make them any easier, if anything it raises the stakes... these songs demand respect and serious preparation." John Kelcher
"Music is about having a heartbeat, not the pulse of electrons across a microchip" Darryl Kirk

The Line-up
- The apostle Paul Kean on bass, is well known for his work in The Bats, Toy Love and more recently Minisnap. As the University of Canterbury Student Association's entertainment co-ordinator Paul has been a pillar of strength in supporting the local music scene.
- Unreformed guitar obsessive, brother John Kelcher formerly of Sneaky Feelings and Creeley has been busy figuring out the fiddly bits, and generally threatening to unleash incendiary guitar upon the happy congregation. John "daylights" as a sound archivist and family man.
- On drums Daryll (the Dexterous) Kirk has pounded the skins for the likes of Squirm and is currently playing bass with the LUNAR IV *The most eligible bachelor of the group, (*REVISED - sorry; he's attached) Darryl is a skilled graphic artist and connoisseur of fine malt whiskeys
- Oliver Scott aka "the Happy Heretic" formerly of The Basket Cases and The Belle Motions must be one of the few contemporary guitarist who dares to play the electric 12 string. Olly's other claims to fame are his definitive biography of Buster Keaton and being the founder of NZ's only hands-on toy museum......

For a couple of years the Chick Magnets took on the mantle of rock 'n roll missionaries in a sea of machine music.

Highlight for the band was a trip to Dunedin to perform a set of songs at an exhibition of New Zealand punk/rock music in the Otago Museum. The set tracked the evolution and early influences on NZ rock & roll and punk music through to the late 1970's and early 1980's sounds from the likes of Toy Love, The Clean and the Gordons.
